Many women, myself included started running so that they can take part in a charity event. The 5K race which is just over 3 miles, is the first goal that many new runners aspire too, and there are many 5K races and events that cater just for women.

train for your first 5K race

For example in the UK alone there is the now famous race for life series of events, which allow women to walk, jog or run 5k to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

There are many health benefits to be gained by following a regular running regime, but you should ease yourself into any running program gradually, and if you are thinking of starting to run for the first time, then always consult a doctor or physician first.

5k Training Advice

There are many web sites, listed below, which offer advice and training schedules to help you achieve your goal of running your first 5K race. Many revolve around the general principle of walking for a set distance or time, then jogging or running for a shorter distance, returning to a walk for a recovery period.

Over the weeks the ratio between running and walking is increased, so that by the end of the six to eight week programme you can run the full 5k distance.
